Trouble with the Curve
Rating: 3/4
Despite "Trouble with the Curve" being a bit predictable (from a mediocre Script, or course) and feeling more of a Father/daughter-like story then a Baseball story, I have to admit that I kind of enjoyed this sane Film. I mean, come on, give four time Academy Award winner Clint Eastwood ("Unforgiven", "Million Dollar Baby") some credit, he's at least having fun with this role. Granted, he is just playing the same exact role that he's played in about a million of all of his other Films. Eastwood is basically a less violent version of Dirty Harry and his charterer from "Gran Torino". So don't worry he doesn't kill anybody in this Film. Along side of Eastwood is Academy Award nominee Amy Adams ("Doubt, "The Fighter") who plays his daughter in this. Like Eastwood, Amy Adams is at least having a good time doing this. Eastwood and Adams also have a great amount of chemistry together in this Film so that's another good enough thing as well. And finally, we have Justin Timberlake ("The Social Network", "Friends with Benefits") tagging along in this Film. What Eastwood, Adams, and Timberlake all have in common is that, despite this Film's problems, there all having so much fun doing this Film that you just ignore all of the problems with "Trouble with the Curve" and just focus on the good performances by Eastwood, Adams, and Timberlake. It's like in Eastwood's old Film "Million Dollar Baby" in which the Film gets very cliched and predictable at times, but what makes it a good Film are the great performances in the Film (In which, for that matter, Hilary Swank, Morgan Freeman, and Eastwood himself). In fact, "Million Dollar Baby" even won Best Picture at the Oscars in 2005. Now while "Trouble with the Curve" won't win any prestigious awards next year, it will still be remembered by some for just being a harmless (not at all in a bad way) and sweet, enjoyable little Film. Now the problem that I had with this Film was that the Script for this Film (by some Writer named Randy Brown) is just very, very mediocre. It's not that the Script terribly written, it's just that it's so, so unbelievably predictable. I pretty much knew EVERYTHING that was going to happen in this Film from top to bottom. Maybe somebody like Aaron Sorkin or William Goldman (two Academy Award winning Writers) should have done some rewrites or Script Doctored this Film to make it much better. Heck, even Tom Stoppard or Robert Towne could have helped out this Film (two more Academy Award winning writers). "Trouble with the Curve" wasn't directed by Eastwood himself. It was directed by Producer Robert Lorenz (who's been the Producer of many of Clint Eastwood's other Film's like "Mystic River" and "J. Edgar"). So, according to Wikipedia, "Trouble with the Curve" marks Clint Eastwood's first acting project since "Gran Torino" and the first one in which he did not direct since his (bizarre -- yes, I saw the Film) cameo in "Casper" in 1995. That's very interesting because if this Wikipedia article is right or wrong, then Eastwood should just stick to just directing his Films because Films like "Trouble with the Curve" are big letdowns to him and his fans. But thankfully, I Eastwood as a Film coming in 2014 and thankfully him, along with Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake, make "Trouble with the Curve" a sweet, enjoyable mess of a Film. A VERY predicable one as well.
