The Great Gatsby
For all of you wondering; No I haven't read or seen the other "Great Gatsby" Films that this is based on so if I say some tings in this review that you may question me about the Book then just stop reading this review and go somewhere else. So why did I like "The Great Gatsby"? Well because at least DiCaprio and Luhrmann are AT LEAST having fun and enjoying themselves while doing this Film. Sure the Film gets uneven at times, Sure it gets kind of boring at times, but if you just clear your Mind and enjoy DiCaprio's ("Titanic", "The Aviator", "The Departed", "Shutter Island") spirited and captivate performance in this Film then I'm sure you'll have a great time with it. Don't forget about his upcoming Film "The Wolf of Wall Street" that he's doing with Martin Scorsese. Plus, don't forget about the dud "J Edgar" that he did with Clint Eastwood back in 2011. DiCaprio WAS AT LEAST having fun with his role as Jay Gatsby, the star of this Film. Carey Mulligan ("An Education", "Never let me go", "Drive") was also good in the Film. She must of read the Book that this is based on because she was great in the Film. You want to see here in another great Film go check out "An education" then you'll really believe me about what I'm saying about her acting. Director/Writer Baz Luhrmann ("Romeo + Juliet", "Moulin Rouge!") not only teams up with DiCaprio again (they worked with each other in the 1997 hit Film "Romeo + Juliet"), but he AT LEAST writes a good enough Script for us so the Film isn't at all painful and embarrassing as you may think it is. Maybe the Script WILL get some Oscar nomination buzz or something because the Film's strongest element was the writing. The writing is fantastic in this. Luhrmann knows how to write a good enough Script without putting in any clichéd moments and sappy melodrama. The Actors also say the dialogue in fun and simple ways. Got to give "Gatsby" credit for that. As you all are aware I went nuts over the Screenplay for this Film. Now what I will say is that the Film gets very uneven at times. It really can't deiced on whether it wants to be a Drama, Comedy, or a Romance. It did get very annoying at times and it made the Film bounce around all over the place. Speaking of that. like most of Luhrmann's Films the way he directs it is just so over the top that a shot of the Film can't even stand still for about 20 seconds. The Film also got pretty boring at times. The Film is more then 2 hours long and, despite the way I said that Luhrmann directs it, was very slow. I closed my Eyes for about 4 minutes during some of the slow parts and crucial parts of the Film but after that finally ended the Film then impressed me. So I fell asleep at it but when I woke up after that it became fun. So I appreciate with what Lurmann and DiCaprio have put together here and I appreciate with what this new Gatsby Film has to offer. So sue me, I liked "The Great Gatsby".
