Inside Llewyn Davis
I already smell some strong Oscar buzz for star Oscar Isaac and for the Films Directors/Producers/Writers Joel and Ethan Coen. Now Joel and Ethan Coen or The Coen Brothers, as people usually call them, are mostly known for making dark, graphic comedy Films. From Films like "Blood Simple", "Barton Fink", "Fargo" (in which they both won there first Oscars for writing the Film in 1997), "The Big Lebowski", "No Country for Old Men" (in which the Coens won yet again for writing, directing, and producing the Film), and more. "Inside Llewyn Davis" is more of a slow moving drama then a dark comedy. There where some moments in the Film in which I was laughing hard at, but after that the Film became a very slow moving drama about this one guy named Llewyn (which is spelled without an "L") Davis who's a young, struggling folk Singer in 1961. Like if you watch trailers of this on YouTube or Online, you notice how the Film looks and feels like one of those very slow, depressing dramas that's going to be sad and very emotional. But here's the thing though, the Trailers for this may look depressing and sad, the Film ITSELF is actually very funny. Yes, it is slow moving like a lot of people predicted for this, but the Film also becomes very funny at times (the best thing about this Film is that thankfully the Coen Brothers know how to even out drama with dark comedy). This Film wasn't playing in a lot of Theaters so I was able to see this Film by finding a Theater that was playing it about thirty miles away from my House. And it was also 7:30 at night and I wasn't aware that this Film was about an hour and forty minutes long. But, hey, I was able to see "12 Years a Slave" in a Theater that was only playing it at a Theater that was about thirty miles away from my House and I was perfectly fine with that! So, again, although the Film was mostly slow moving for a while, it was able to get back on track with funny moments in which I laughed hard, extremely memorable songs (that I was humming afterwards after the Film ended), and great performances by Oscar Issac, Garret Hedlund, and Justin Timberlake. Issac, Hedlund, and Timberlake give some of the best, most funny, and most emotional performances in this that I have ever seen before. Justin Timberlake especially, who is best known as a Singer, was fantastic in this. He brings so much emotion in this Film that if you watch this, you'll remember his outstanding performance in "The Social Network". However, the real star in this was Oscar Issac as the Film's title character, Llewyn Davis. I thought he was great and very funny in this Film. This Film may stand out with all of the Coens other Films as well because unlike there Films in which it was filled with a boatload of memorable characters like Barton Fink, The Dude, or Anton Chigurh. In "Inside Llewyn Davis" there are instead boatloads of memorable songs like "Please Mr. Kennedy (the song that I was humming to after I was done seeing this), "Five Hundred Miles", and "Fare Thee Well" (which was the song that was playing in most of the trailers for this). And, yes, I looked up what these songs where called Online. So although the Film was very slow at times, it was still able to get right back on track with great performances, humor and songs. And I do hope that "Inside Llewyn Davis" gets recognized by the Academy because we need to add more Films to the Oscars next year in 2014, and we already have critically acclaimed Films like "Gravity" and "12 Years a Slave". We need more on that List!
