Captain Phillips
Rating: 3.5/4
I saw "Captain Phillips" at a later time because like an idiot I blew my money on seeing the God-awful "Machete Kills" instead. And I highly, highly regret that.
So, "Captain Phillips" is a very good Film by Director Paul Greengrass ("The Bourne Ultimatum", "United 93") and stars Tom Hanks and new comer Barkhad Abdi (who use to be a Limo Driver). What makes this Film work is because not only does Greengrass direct this Film in a way that your just so tense and on the edge of your (He always does in pretty much ALL of his Films that he's ever done) Seat for about 85% of the Film, but Hanks and Abdi give to of the best performances on screen together that you may ever see in any Film of 2013. Hanks -- already a great, Academy Award winning actor -- is fantastic and perfectly cast in this as Captain Richard Phillips. Abdi, by surprise, gives such a great performance in this that you think to yourself: "He may win something for this Film". "Captain Phillips" also builds up a lot of character development to because we not only see Hank's character build up, but we also see Abdi's character as well. That really surprised me because I thought that "Captain Phillips" was just going to be just Hank's side of the whole Film. But, actually, it involves what Hank's and Abdi are both going through in this. You see how Hanks is struggling to survive out at Sea and how Abdi is struggling on being a nefarious Samoan Pirate Leader. I HAVE to give Grenngrass major points on that one. It makes this Film just so intense and just absolutely brilliant. Even from the Trailers you think that it's just going to be about Hank's struggling to survive in this Film, but, no, you see how Abdi is largely struggling on becoming a good enough Pirate-Captain for him and his entourage of four others (who also seem to have no idea of what there doing). It makes this Film be very intense and very interesting at the same time. Rare that we see that in Films these days ESPECIALLY with the subject matter being involved with this Film. All together, it workes out fine with great directing from Greengrass and great acting from stars Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi. "Captain Phillips" is basically both an acting and a directing Film at the same time. Now people are going to buy this Film up because it's one of the Films that looks so well-made, so well-put together, and just a flat-out great Film. And it is. It's one of the best of 2013. Now, even though I said before that since i'm not a big, professional Film Critic I don't make best and worst of the year list, but if I was then I would definitely, definitely name this one of the best of 2013.
So if you saw "Captain Phillips" on it's opening day, good for you and I hope that you had one hell of an intense Film experience that night. However, if you instead wasted your money on the crappy "Machete Kills" and thought that THAT was going to be an intense Film experience.... Then I have bad news for you.....
