Les Miserables
Easily one of the worst Musicals I have ever seen adapted into a Film for a long long time. But honestly THAT'S not even a bad thing really! What I mean by that is that I had a lot of anticipation for this Film because of all of the glowing praise Anne Hathaway ("Rachel getting married", "Brokeback Mountain") was receiving for her acting in the Film. Now after I was done seeing it I had mixed feelings with it at first and I needed it to just melt in my head for a couple of days and when it all happened I honestly had more positive then negative to say about this Film. What I think positively about the Film is the performances by Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman. They both bring there characters to life in the best possible way ever. I really felt some empathy for Hugh Jackman's ("X-Men") character in the beginning because of all of the emotion he bring into his character. Now Anne Hathaway..... Holy Crap....... She was FANTASTIC as her role as Fantine, a struggles Factory worker who looses her Job and then has to become a Prostitute to get money, especially her solo of the hit Song "I dreamed a dream" in which she gives the performances of the year. Honestly after the 3 minute song ended I was just thinking she may get nominated or win an Oscar for her performance. It was also like the Film "Rachel getting married" didn't even exist anymore. She also did that scene in one take live so she gets extra points for that to. Some of the other songs in the Film were also pretty good. Now what I think Negatively about the Film is that 90 percent of the whole 2 hour and 40 minute Film is just singing. The Film like never breaths or just stops singing for like a second or two. I don't know if all musicals are like that but I'm pretty sure the one's adapted into Films aren't! Honestly, Russel Crowe ("Gladiator", "A beautiful Mind") CANNOT SING IN THE FILM! I thought he was terrible in this. The cinematography is terrible. The Film is shot in the kind of handheld Camerawork that they used in "Zero dark thirty". It REALLY got on my nerves and bothered me for some of it. I guess maybe the reason that some of the stuff in the Film is like this because I think Director Tom Hopper ("The King's Speech", "The Damned united") wanted to make the musical more human and in touch with the Musical that it was based on. But it is what it is. Anyway to wrap it up I thought it was a good little Film with great performances by Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman. So for most of it's flaws I was still entertained. Hey, "Les Miserables" is a hell of a lot better then "Rock of ages" that came out earlier that year so give this Film credit for that to!
